Fortune and Despair

the hum of the engine

hapless soundtrack of the unfamiliar

at every turn a new decision

sitting in the cabin

no passengers at my side

whilst huge

barreling

mechanical behemoths

pass with thunderous aplomb

so proud

so steadfast and sure

speeding down the pitted mat

surpassing me at every turn

dizzying barrage of traffic lights

street signs

and rest stops

crossroads yielding fortune and despair

unmarked and uncertain

wreckage confettid in gore

of others who lost sight
